REAL WORLD PROJECTS
Really English -
Everlight Test Center
My role as
project lead was to develop and build an interactive test
for a Taiwanese company that allowed them to test their
students - using different exams - at the end of their
e-learning courses. My brief was to come up with an
intuitive test interface that allowed for audio and text, a
simple CMS interface that could be used for inputting
future exams, and, most importantly ,configurations that
allowed the company’s HR to tweak the tests to their needs
as much as possible. The product also included detailed
user tracking and systems to stop potential
cheating.

Cambridge Let’s Talk 2
I was project
manager for this project as well as designing the user
interface. Let’s Talk is a leading English language course
book that specialises in speaking, and Cambridge wanted an
online product that captured the spirit of the book as well
as allowing students to practice their speaking. I designed
an interface that used a combination of avatars and audio
recording software, giving the writers freedom to create a
script that closely followed the book.
The prototype was
created using Flash CS3 and Actionscript 3.0.

McGraw Hill Practical English
I was technical project manager for this multi-million
upgrade of really english’s best selling project. I managed
a team of Flash developers and illustrators, turning
prototypes into fully functional templates that were
incorporated into a CMS.

Tokyo Women’s Medical Institute Medical
English
I was project manager for this product, working with a
freelance illustrator and Flash developer. The university
wanted a product that allowed their students to practice
conversations in a formal medical setting. We modified a
set of existing product templates with increased / improved
functionality and a new ‘medical’ design.
ec1fm.org.uk
This site was constructed for EC1FM, a
community radio station in Clerkenwell, North London. The
station is supported by EC1 New Deal for Communities and
City University.
The main requirement of the station was to have a site
where users could listen to the shows via live streaming
radio. They also needed a dynamic schedule page, a contact
page, podcasts and general information about the shows and
DJs / producers.
The site was constructed using Flash, Actionscript 2.0 and
PHP.
MSc ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING
COURSEWORK
Digital
Ancestors (Writing and
Editing for the Electronic Medium)
Awarded Grade: Distinction (December 2006)
The primary aim of this site was to showcase a two-part
feature story I wrote on the popularity of online
genealogy. The site had to feature audio clips of
interviewees. The clips had to supplement the story in one
way or another. I also added a slide show of census
clippings taken from the web.
The site was constructed using HTML and CSS (tableless).
Erasmus Mundus
Masters (Design and
Layout)
Awarded Grade: Distinction (May 2007)
The aim of this project was to redesign three pages taken
from the Erasmus Mundus Masters site run by City
University. This two year journalism masters is financed by
the EU and is taken by professional journalists from around
the world. The objectives of the project was to design the
site in three stages: paper prototypes; digital prototypes;
and web rendering. Gestalt principles, grids, and CSS
positioning (tableless) were also used.
The site was
constructed using XHTML and CSS.
London Horror Map
(Multimedia)
Awarded Grade: Distinction (May 2007)
The objective of the Multimedia coursework was to design
and build a Flash movie that could be launched directly
from a CD. The application I choose to design was an
interactive map. The requisites for the movie were that it
must include video, buttons, sound effects, and
animation.
The movie was
constructed using Flash MX 2004 and Actionscript
2.0.
Angels &
Demons (Web
Applications Development)
Awarded Grade: Merit (May 2007)
The goal of this
project was to develop an e-commerce site using MySql and
PHP. The focus was on implementing server side technology
rather than front end design. I chose to set up a site in
which customers could purchase tickets for an imaginary
music festival.
The site was constructed using XHTML, CSS (tableless),
JavaScript, Flash, PHP and MySql.
